“경찰청창살나보다 잘하는데? 나이지리아 대통령이 돼야겠는데요. 하루에 몇 시간씩 했어요? 천재예요?”
“Are you better than a police pronunciation test? He has to become Nigerian president. How many hours a day did you practice? Are you genius?”

[오프닝]
“오늘 거리에서 외국인들에게 언어 능력에 관한 질문을 던져 볼 건데요 과연 외국인들은 외국어를 몇 개나 할까요? 또 어디서 배웠을까요? 그리고 그들이 생각하는 가장 어려운 언어는 무엇일까요? 렛츠비긴”
“Today on the street we’re going to ask foreigners about their language abilities. How many languages do they speak? Where did they learn them? And what do they think is the most difficult language? Let’s begin.”

[벨기에]

“벨기에에서 살고 있어요. 여기는 문화적으로도 글로벌한 경우가 많아요. 저는 여섯 개 언어를 할 수 있어요. 엄청 잘하진 못하지만, 기본적인 건 알아요. 프랑스어, 영어, 스페인어를 하고요, 에스토니아어, 이탈리아어, 그리고 아빠 영향으로 네덜란드어도 조금 해요. 아빠가 언어학자거든요. 지금은 한국어를 배우고 있어요. 두 달 전쯤, 아니면 올해부터 시작했어요. 엄마에게서 배웠어요. 그게 제 모국어예요. 엄마랑은 스페인어로 이야기하면서 자랐어요. 아빠는 에스토니아어도 가르쳐 주려고 했고요. 영어는 어릴 때 선생님에게 배웠어요. 그러다가 수업은 그만두고 유튜브로 영어 영상을 보기 시작했어요. 그래서 지금은 읽는 것도, 보는 콘텐츠도 전부 영어예요. 이탈리아어는 제 베스트 프렌드가 이탈리아 사람이에요. 에스토니아어는 흔하지 않은 언어라서 배울 자료를 찾기가 어려워요. 쓰는 사람도 많지 않고요. 그래서 어렵죠. 앞으로는 한국어를 더 잘하고 싶고, 가능하다면 일본어도 배우고 싶어요. 재밌어 보여요.”
“I live in Belgium. It’s very culturally global there. I can speak six languages. Not all of them very well, but I know the basics. I speak French, English, Spanish, Estonian, Italian, and a bit of Dutch because my dad is a linguist. I’m currently learning Korean. I started about two months ago, or this year. I learned Spanish from my mom. It’s my mother tongue. I grew up speaking Spanish with her. My dad also tried to teach me Estonian. I learned English from a teacher when I was younger, then I stopped classes and started watching YouTube videos in English. Now I read and watch content only in English. My best friend is Italian, so that’s how I learned Italian. Estonian is not a common language, so it’s hard to find materials and not many people speak it. That makes it difficult. In the future I want to improve my Korean, and maybe learn Japanese. It looks fun.”

[러시아]

“러시아 오세티아에서 왔어요. 저는 네 개 언어를 해요. 러시아어, 헝가리어, 영어도 하고, 독일어도 배우고 있어요. 독일어는 좋은 선택이라고 생각해요. 러시아어는 제 모국어예요. 영어는 학교에서 배웠고요. 독일어는 대학교에서 시작했어요. 독일어가 제일 어려워요. 영어는 학교 내내 해서 그렇게 어렵진 않았어요. 영어는 지금까지 배운 언어 중에 가장 많은 기회를 줘요. 영어로 된 콘텐츠가 정말 많거든요. 그래서 꼭 필요해요.”
“I’m from Russia, Ossetia. I speak four languages: Russian, (unclear), and Hungarian. Can you speak Russian? I also speak English and I’m learning German. I think German is a good choice. Russian is my native language. I started learning English at school and German at university. German is the most difficult language. English was not that difficult because I studied it all through school. English gives the most opportunities out of the languages I’ve learned. There’s a lot of content in English, so it’s necessary.”

[네덜란드]

“네덜란드에서 왔어요. 세 개 언어를 알아요. 영어, 네덜란드어, 그리고 한국어 조금이요. 한국어는 아직 배우는 중이에요. 그래서 가장 어려워요.”
“I’m from the Netherlands. I know three languages: English, Dutch, and a little Korean. I’m still learning Korean, so it’s the hardest.”

[나이지리아]

“인터뷰 감사합니다. 어디서 오셨어요?”
“Thank you for our interview. Where are you from?”

“나이지리아에서 왔어요. 부르키나파소 쪽에서 살았고요. 왜 이렇게 영어를 잘해요? 나이지리아에는 500개가 넘는 언어가 있어요. 공식 언어는 영어예요. 집에서는 엄마 언어를 쓰고, 도시마다 언어가 달라요. 그래서 어릴 때부터 자연스럽게 배워요.”
“I’m from Nigeria. I also lived in Burkina Faso. Why do I speak English well? There are over 500 languages in Nigeria. Our official language is English. At home we use my mom’s language, and each city has its own language. So we naturally learn from childhood.”

[영국]

“인터뷰 감사합니다. 어디서 오셨어요?”
“Thank you for our interview. Where are you from?”

“영국에서 왔어요. 영어 하나, 그리고 학위 과정에서, 지금은 한국어를 배우고 있어요. 한국어는 아직 완벽하진 않아요. 엄마랑 집에서는 영어를 썼어요. 영국에 살고 있어서 영어가 주 언어예요. 대학교에서 한국어를 배우고 있어요.”
“We’re from England. I speak English, and now I’m learning Korean as part of my degree. My Korean is not perfect yet. At home we used English with my mum. I live in the UK, so English is the main language. I’m learning Korean at university.”
